Caring for a child with autism is a full-time job, and as parents, we dedicate our time, energy, and love to ensuring they receive the best care possible. But did you know that in California, parents can actually get paid to be their child’s caregiver?

One of the most life-changing programs available to families in California is In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)

What is IHSS?

IHSS (In-Home Supportive Services) is a state-funded program that allows parents to be paid caregivers for their child with special needs. This program provides financial assistance to families who need extra support while caring for their autistic child at home.

Instead of hiring an outside caregiver, you can be the one providing care and receive financial support for the work you already do every day!

How to Qualify for IHSS

To be eligible for IHSS, your child must:

  • Have a long-term disability, such as autism

  • Be enrolled in Medi-Cal (California’s Medicaid program)

What If My Income is Too High for Medi-Cal?

Good news! Even if your household income is too high, your child can still qualify through a Medi-Cal waiver from the Regional Center. This waiver allows your child to be eligible for Medi-Cal based on their own income—not yours!

How to Apply for IHSS
  1. Get Medi-Cal – If your child isn’t already on Medi-Cal, apply or request a waiver through your local Regional Center.

  2. Apply for IHSS – Contact your local IHSS office to start the application process.

  3. In-Home Assessment – A social worker will visit your home to assess your child’s needs and determine the number of care hours they qualify for.

  4. Get Approved & Start Receiving Payments – Once approved, you’ll be able to get paid for providing care to your child!

Not in California? There May Be Similar Programs in Your State!

While IHSS is only available in California, other states may have similar programs that offer financial support to parents caring for children with disabilities. If you’re outside of California, I recommend:

  • Contacting your state’s Department of Health & Human Services

  • Asking your child’s pediatrician about financial assistance programs

  • Researching Medicaid waiver programs in your state

This Program can help Changed your Life in the Most Positive Way!

Being a parent to an autistic child comes with unique challenges, but you are not alone. IHSS has been a game-changer for many families, providing both financial relief and the ability to continue caring for one’s child at home. I hope this information helps other families access the support they deserve!
