If you have a child under the age of three who has been diagnosed with autism or is showing signs of developmental delays, early intervention can make a world of difference. In California, the Regional Center offers a program called Early Start, designed to provide critical support for infants and toddlers while also guiding and assisting their families.

What is Early Start?

Early Start is a state-funded program that provides free services to help young children with developmental delays reach their full potential. Research shows that early intervention can significantly improve a child’s communication skills, social interactions, and overall development. The goal of Early Start is to give children the tools they need to thrive before they reach preschool age.

What Services Does Early Start Offer?

If your child qualifies for Early Start, they may receive a variety of completely free services, including:

• Speech Therapy – To help improve communication and language skills

• Occupational Therapy – To support motor skills, sensory processing, and daily tasks

• Physical Therapy – To enhance mobility, strength, and coordination

• Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy – A structured approach to improving social, communication, and behavioral skills

• Developmental Assessments – To track your child’s progress and adjust interventions as needed

• Family Counseling & Training – To equip parents with strategies to support their child’s growth at home

How to Access Early Start Services

One of the best things about Early Start is that it’s completely free for eligible families, with no income requirements or out-of-pocket costs. If you’re in California, you can request a free assessment through your local Regional Center to determine if your child qualifies. To find your nearest Regional Center, visit dds.ca.gov and navigate to the Early Start program.

What If I’m Not in California?

Early Start is a California-specific program, but if you’re in another state, there are still resources available. Many states offer early intervention services through their Department of Developmental Services or Early Intervention Programs. If you’re unsure where to start, speak with your child’s pediatrician—they can guide you to local programs that offer similar support.

Why Early Intervention Matters

The first three years of life are crucial for brain development. The earlier a child receives intervention, the better their chances of developing strong communication, social, and daily living skills. Even small improvements at a young age can have a lasting impact on their future.

If you suspect your child may have developmental delays, don’t wait—reach out for support today. Every child deserves the best possible start in life, and early intervention can make all the difference.
