As a parent of an autistic child, I know how overwhelming it can be to find the right support. That’s why I want to highlight one of the best resources available for individuals with developmental disabilities—regional centers.

If you’re in California, regional centers offer a variety of programs to support children with autism and their families. Here are three incredible programs that can make a huge difference in your child’s life:

1. Medi-Cal Waiver Program

Many families worry about the cost of therapies and medical care for their autistic child. The Medi-Cal waiver program offered through regional centers helps children with disabilities qualify for Medi-Cal (Medicaid) based on their own income—not their parents’.

This means your child can receive:

ABA therapy (Applied Behavior Analysis)

Speech therapy

Occupational therapy

Medical and dental coverage

Even if you think your family earns too much to qualify for Medi-Cal, the waiver program can override income restrictions, ensuring that your child gets the services they need.

2. Reimbursement for Social & Recreational Activities

Children on the spectrum often benefit from social and recreational activities that help them build skills, improve coordination, and interact with others. However, these activities can be expensive. Thankfully, regional centers offer a reimbursement program to cover the costs of activities such as:

Music lessons

Basketball & team sports

Swimming lessons

Karate & martial arts

Art & creative classes

This program makes it easier for families to enroll their children in fun, enriching activities without worrying about the financial burden.

3. Respite Care Services

Taking care of a child with special needs is rewarding but can also be exhausting. Every parent or caregiver needs a break sometimes, and that’s where respite care services come in.

Regional centers cover the cost of in-home respite care, allowing a caregiver to come to your home and watch your child while you:

Run errands

Take a break

Focus on work or personal tasks

Even better, a family member (other than a spouse) can be paid to provide this care! It’s a great way to ensure your child is with someone they trust while giving you some much-needed relief.

Not in California? You May Have Similar Resources!

While regional centers are unique to California, other states have similar programs. If you’re outside California, try:

Checking with your state’s Department of Health & Human Services

Asking your child’s pediatrician for recommendations

Researching Medicaid waivers and special needs programs in your state
